SIERRA BLANCA BLADDERPOD

Lesquerella pinetorum

Mustard Family, Brassicaceae

Perennial herb, from foothill scrub to spruce-fir forest, 8,000–10,000 ft.; 4–12 in. high. Stems one to several, erect to reclining, usually grayish green with star-shaped hairs. Basal leaves rhombic to elliptic, ½–3 in. long, tapering basally to a long, slender petiole. Stem leaves petiolate, alternate, spatulate to oblanceolate, up to 4 in. long, ½ in. wide. Flowers on pedicels at stem ends, yellow; 4 sepals, ovate to oblong; 4 petals, spatulate, up to ½ in. long; 6 stamens, 4 equal, 2 shorter. Fruit: an elliptical to spherical 2-chambered pod up to ⅓ in. long, with the slender style remnant extending from the top (lower-right photo). Blooms April into June.
